In defense of Tsubaki Factory

Poor, poor Tsubaki Factory... Constantly neglected in favour of their Kobushi brethren. Let's be honest, Kobushi Factory is awesome and Tsubaki Factory's first two singles were distinctly... average by comparison.

But people can be so cruel to these budding camelias. I've heard things such as- "(insert member name) are only in the group because they are pretty", "None of them can sing", "for a group that only exists because the members are pretty they sure are average looking".

Now let's be honest, these criticisms are not unfounded especially when you compare the group to Kobushi Factory (Who are already one of the best groups in H!P). However, I am here to play devil's advocate and defend Tsubaki.

First of all, Yes, Tsubaki does not sound as good vocally as Kobushi. This is undeniably true. However, they have improved considerably since they debuted and will probably continue to do so into the future. Kobushi also has the advantage of more members which makes it easier to hide any less vocally talented members.

The members of both Tsubaki and Kobushi are undeniably beautiful. Tsubaki is especially lucky seeing how for some reason, the first official pictures for new members always...Look awkward.
 Case and point.

Also let's be honest, Kobushi has been getting better songs. Every song released by Kobushi so far has been awesome. Tsubaki's songs have been forgettable by comparison. It made me wonder... Does the managment hate Tsubaki for some reason?

Actually, It reminds me of a similar situation back in 2006. Remember these little upstarts?

Wanna see what they look like now (minus a few members)?

Its amzing to see how far C-ute has come since they were formed. The girls who weren't good enough to be in Berryz Koubou. The left overs. Now easily the most talented group in H!P.

The two Factory groups were given their names in honour of Berryz Koubou. It makes me wonder if Tsubaki's start in life as the lesser factory groups is meant to reflect what happened with C-ute.
It makes me wonder whether history will follow the same pattern with Tsubaki Factory. For a possible preview of what might be to come, let's take a look at how far the girls of C-ute have come since their debut.

2006- Meet Maimi, an average singer and dancer. Leader of the Berryz rejects.

2016- Meet Maimi, A pretty good singer and awesome dancer, leader of the whole of H!P.

2006- Meet Saki, she's a shy 12 year old who can't really sing or dance...

2016- Meet Saki, she is easily one of the best dancers in H!P and (in my humble opinion) the most beautiful girl in the entire world. Her singing has also improved somewhat.

2006- Meet Airi, ok, Airi was always pretty awesome.

2016- Meet Airi, basically 2006 Airi x100.

2006- Meet Chisato, a cute little girl who more often than no looks like a little boy.

2016- Meet Chisato, one of the best singers in H!P, one of the best dancers in H!P and one of the most beautiful young women I've ever seen!

2006- Meet Mai, a cute little chipmunk wearing oversized sunglasses.

2016- Meet Mai, fully grown chipmunk and great all round performer.

So it seems this post became more about C-ute than Tsubaki. I wonder how that happened?
Anyway my point wasn't that people should stop being critical of Tsubaki since I'm sure it will only make them stronger. My point is that even if Tsubaki has been getting the short end of the stick so far, I'm sure they will pull through and become a great idol group.

Second look at the 12th Gen

Back in 2014 I made a post aboout the newly announced 12th gen of morning musume. Now that the announcement 13th gen is drawing ever closer, let's see how my opinions have changed.

Nonaka Miki
"Taking advantage of my experiences until now, and moreover, polishing my skills I'd like to catch up with the senpais"
Back in 2014 I ranked Miki as my 3rd favorite 12th gen member. Let's just say my mind has been completly changed. She is the top contender for the esteemed position of my favorite MM member after Zukki graguates. First I was attracted by her performance in the audition footage and her mad english skillz. However, what really got me on her side was when I read that after winning a solo performance of her choice in the Hello Pro Station english corner (a rigged contest if there ever was one) she asked Zukki to perform with her! Isn't she the most darling creampuff ever! I unsure of what her motivations were (to show her appreciation to a respected senpai, to earn the love of zukki fans everywhere) but whatever it was, she has definately suceeded!

 Makino Maria
"Ten years from now, I hope I'll be the leader of Morning Musume. I'm a big fan of Michishige Sayumi. I want to devote myself to Morning Musume like she did."
Maria has dropped in my ranking but not through any fault of her own. She is one of the most beautiful members of MM and has some of the best performance skills in the 12th gen. I don't really know why she dropped off the radar for me, maybe I set my expectations to high to early... Anyway she's still a great addition to the group and possibly the best performance-wise out of 12th gen. I just can't really say she's my favorite right now... However watching her performance of Daite yo! PLEASE GO ON really makes me want to reconsider...

 Haga Akane
"In 10 years, I'll be 23. I want stay in Morning Musume. And I want to look back when I'm 23 and be glad I worked hard. So I'm going to push myself harder in rehearsals."
When I first saw Haa-chin was in the group I was... underwhelmed... I didn't really see what she brought to the group. She never really stood out amoung the eggs to me like Maria did. I'm still not fully convinced why she was chosen to be honest, but I'm truly glad she was! She is seriously cute and seems to be serious about her role in MM. Her performance skills leave something to be desired but to be honest that's not a huge part of being an idol anyway and I am certain Haa-chin has huge potential as an idol.

 Ogata Haruna
"I'll work hard to increase my amount of practice so I'll be able to follow along with the things like singing and dancing I can't do as well as others"
I was disapointed with her when I saw the audition footage... I still liked her but I was expecting so much more. She is definately the prettiest in the generation and stands out due to her past time as a figure skater. She's not really my favorite of the generation but I'm not sure she has had the chance to shine yet. I always love her solo shots in MVs since she always looks gorgeous.

So as you can see my opinions have changed greatly over the last two years. It just goes to show, when the 13th gen are announced and I write a post reacting to it, all my opinions will have completely changed in just a few years so don't take anything I say too seriously.
For those who are interested this is my currant ranking of MM16 members.

12. Ishida Ayumi
11. Ikuta Erina
10. Ogata Haruna
9. Fukumura Mizuki

7. Makino Maria
6. Haga Akane
5. Iikubo Haruna
4. Kudo Haruka
3. Sato Masaki
2. Nonaka Miki
1. Suzuki Kanon

Thoughts on Hello Pro Kenshuusei

I feel like it's time I made a post about my opinions on the Kenshuusei (not including Tsubaki Factory since they are basically guaranteed a debut). Most of my opinions are from the yearly Test Events (mainly the 2015 one).
(I will probably alternate between using the terms Trainee,Kenshuusei and egg, just to confuse you)

 17th Gen
  •  Ichioka Reina
  •  Age 17
  • Very pretty
  • Decent singer and seems to be confident on stage
  • I wouldn't be surprised to see her debut, but she doesn't really stand out to me much.

  • Kaga Kaede
  • Age 16
  • Probably one of the most popular with fans
  • Good singer
  • Fierce dancer
  • Seems to be one of the most pushed by management, has been in several of the H!P stageplays
  • Runner up for dancing in the 2014 test event and won the fan's vote in 2015
  • It's a little worrying that she has been in H!P for over 3 years and hasn't really done much yet
  • I really like her new haircut
  • She really needs to debut. I can see her in Morning Musume or maybe a new unit (though I dought one will be formed so soon after the factories) If she gets sick of being ignored by H!P and leaves, I can see one of the 48/46 groups taking her in.

19th Gen
  • Inoue Hikaru
  •  Age 15
  • Good performer
  • Pretty cute (but not as cute as some of the other Kenshuusei)
  • Has been a member for almost 3 years but hasn't really been pushed much (makes me think the managment don't like her)
  • However, she won the "shimizu" award at 2015 test event so they are at least paying her some attention.
  • Another Kenshuusei I don't really pay much attention to. I can see her debuting one day but then again, I also wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't.

 20th Gen
  •  Danbara Ruru
  •  Age 14
  • Good singer
  • Good dancer
  • Makes nice facial expressions while singing
  • popular with fans (won the fan vote in the 2014 test event)
  • Runner up for the singing award in the 2015 test event
  • Seems to be pretty popular and she's still only 14. I can see her joining a group and being pretty successful. She's not really on my radar right now, however.

  •  Yokogawa Yumei
  •  Age 17
  • Recently cut her hair and while she still looks cute with it short, I miss her long hair (in this picture it kind of reminds me of Lida Kaori.
  • Very, very pretty
  • Not a fan of her singing
  • I don't really see her debuting in H!P. She could be a good Nakajima Saki type idol but I don't really see her fitting into any H!P group right now.

21st Gen
  •  Takemura Miu
  •  Age 14
  • Decent singer and dancer
  • Seems a little unsure of herself sometimes
  • When you see the confident side of her, you can tell she would make an excellent idol.
  • Member of a local idol group
  • I can see her debuting someday but I think she needs some more time as a trainee first.

 22nd Gen
  •  Horie Kizuki
  • Age 17
  • Not the most photogenic member. It's not that she isn't pretty, she looks great in some pictures and then there are some where her facial expressions look a bit awkward.
  • Good at both singing and dancing.
  • Very experianced, was a member of a local idol group before joining Nice Girl Project and later Hello Project.
  • Won best character award in the 2015 test event
  • Seems quite good at the mature, sexy songs.
  • I really like her and I think she should debut but I don't really know where... I could see her in morning musume but there are other eggs I think would fit in there more. I worry that maybe she's getting too old to debut in an existing group but maybe they could form a new group with her in it (or she could debut outside of H!P).

  •  Onoda Saori
  •  Age 14
  • Has been an idol since 2010
  • Won Best Character award in 2015 test event
  • Not my favorite singer but has good stage presence
  • Probably one of the cutest members
  • I could definately see her in ANGERME and maybe Momusu

  •  Shimano Momoko
  •  Age 16
  • I don't like her new haircut, she looks much better with it long like in the picture.
  • Not sure about her singing but she always looks really happy when performing
  • Despite not having much to say about her, I really like her and would like to see her debut. I don't think she really fits into any H!P group right now. I could maybe see her in ANGERME but I don't see them holding auditions for a while so I don't think that's likely.

  •  Hashimoto Nagisa
  •  Age 18
  • Not sure about the singing
  • Good dancing from the neck down
  • Runner up for dance award in the 2015 test event
  • She sometimes has wierd facial expressions
  • Not really on my radar, I would be surprised to see her debut

23rd Gen

  • Takase Kurumi
  •  Age 17
  • My favorite member
  • Good singer
  • Great dancer
  • Very experianced (was a member of a local idol group)
  • Has appeared in several stageplays and TV shows
  • Is good at both cute fun songs and mature sexy songs.
  • Very cute
  • I want her in Morning Musume! I could also see her in ANGERME but I think she might be too old now. I could also see her as a soloist, or a member of Engeki Joshibu. Anything really, she just needs to debut. She is the sole member of her generation which gives me the feeling the management has a plan for her.

24th Gen
  • Kasahara Momona
  • Age 12
  • Very cute and has a nice personality
  • Singing is... not great
  • Looks like she's having fun when she's performing
  • Still very young so while I'm not a fan of her voice, she still has plenty of time to improve and she seems to have potential as an idol.
  • She's super young and I don't think she's debut ready yet.

  • Nakano Rion
  •  Age 14
  • Seems quite unsure of herself while performing
  • Sometimes makes wierd facial expressions
  • Singing is below average
  • Not really a member I'm focussing on right now.

  •  Akiyama Mao
  •  Age 13
  • Seems to be getting cuter every day
  • Decent singer
  • Pretty confident on stage
  • Not my favorite member but I wouldn't be surprised to see her debut, in fact, I think I'd be more surprised if she didn't debut. She's not really my favorite member but I'm starting to like her more and more.

  •  Kanatsu Mizuki
  • Age 13
  • Another girl who just cut off all her beautiful hair...
  • A pretty decent performer (and she's still young so has plenty of time to improve)
  • Seems nervous on stage (in the 2015 test event, I was worried she might start crying  :(  )
  • I'm not gonna lie, I worry about mizuki. I think she really likes being an idol but her emotions get the better of her when she's on stage and she get's nervous. I hope she can get over that soon. She's still just a little kid and is clearly out of her comfort zone. That said,s he seems to be the determined type and I'd love to see her debut one day.

  • Ono Mizuho
  • Age 15
  • Good performer
  • Her singing needs some work
  • Seriously cute
  • Not really on my radar

  • Maeda Kokoro
  •  Age 13
  • Very cute
  • Seems a bit nervous on stage (She's barely been a member for one year though so she'll probably get over thet)
  • Singing is not perfect (but again she has plenty of time to improve)
  • Despite seeming a little unsure of herself, she seems to really enjoy being on stage.
  • Upon researcher this post I seem to have become a fan of kokoro. I don't know if she is debut ready yet, but I would love to see her in a group someday.

25th Gen-(These girls have only just been introduced and I don't really know much about them performance-wise so these will just be superficial reactions based on the small amount of info I have on them right now)

  •  Noguchi Kurumi
  • Age 14
  • Looks a but awkward in some pictures but that's pretty normal for the first couple of pictures (I don't know why but H!P often seems to use bad or wierd looking pictures for new members first profile picture- maybe it's some kind of initiation?)
  • Seems to be a sporty girl

  •  Ono Kotomi
  • Age 13
  • Was part of Avex Academy's dance program
  • Plays guitar

  •  Kodama Sakiko
  • Age 12
  • Was part of Avex Academy's dance program and Deluxe Colors and Farewell MY L.u.v.

  •  Yonemura Kirara
  • Age 11
  • Claims her most happy moment is when she is sleeping (I like her already)

  •  Kiyono Momohime
  • Age 11
  • Was part of Avex Artist academy's dance program and a member of Juri♡Puri and Amorecarina.
  • Plays guitar
  • Really loves cheese

Right now my favorite members are-

1. Takase Kurumi
2. Kaga Kaede
3. Horie Kizuki
4. Maeda Kokoro

So now for some eye candy of my favorite members
